Private Quelch was a man of immense knowledge and supreme self confidence. He did not shy away from showing off his knowledge both among his juniors as well as before his seniors. He did not see his exhibitionist nature as a shortcoming. On the contrary, he believed that people looked up to him with admiration due to the store house of information he possessed. Little did he know that his fellow colleagues made fun of him in his absence and called him ‘the professed’ for his showy nature. His reckless behavior got him in trouble when he crossed his line with Corporal Turnbull. The corporal, with the intention of teaching him a lesson, posted him for permanent cookhouse duty.
