Ivan Ivanich was the central character in

"Gooseberries". He was a veterinary surgeon who told a story about

his younger brother Nicholai, to his friends Bourkin and Aliokhin.

Ivan was a cynical man who considered his brother to be

delusional, arrogant and misguided. He was narrow-minded and could not

understand why his brother lived in a different way. He tried to change

Nicholai's lifestyle by giving him money. It looked as if he wanted to control

what did not make sense to him. But at the same time he had an upright sense of

justice and was sad to see the way Nicholai treated the elderly widow he had

married for the sake of her money.

His experience with his brother had made Ivan even more

disenchanted with the world than he had been previously. He wanted changes

which would bring advantages to the impoverished and underprivileged. But he

was upset that the realization had come to him too late. He felt that he was

too old to take part in a worthwhile fight for good in the world.
