Explanation:

• Bholi’s parents were quite ordinary parents. Her father, Ramlal was the Numberdar of his village. Ramlal had seven children — three sons and four daughters; He was quite prosperous; he was quite traditional in his outlook. He sent his son to city for higher education; but he arranged for his daughters when they were quite young.

• He was quite much worried about Bholi because of her looks and stuttering. Ramlal had to send Bholi to school because of pressure from Tehsildar.  

• Ramlal’s wife was very backward in thinking; she believed if the girls were allowed to go to schools, nobody would marry them.  

• Bholi needed special care, but neither of her parents did that; they just wanted to get her married.

• When marriage proposal from Bishamber came who was a widower and many years older than Bholi, they accepted the proposal without consulting Bholi.
