Given:

Charge +10-⁹C is located at the origin in free space & another charge Q at (2, 0, 0).

To find:

If the X-component of the electric field at 3, 2015 zero, calculate the value of Q is the Y component zero at (3, 1, 1)?

Solution:

From given, we have the coordinates as follows:

q = (3, 1, 1)

Q = (2, 0, 0)

we have,

E_q = kQ/√(3² + 1² + 1²) [ (3i + j + k)/√11 ]

E_Q = kQ/√(1² + 1² + 1²) [ (i - j - k)/√3 ]

At P, x component of field is zero.

⇒ (E_q + E_Q)_x = 0

⇒ 3kQ/(√11)³ = -Qk/(√3)³

Q = -3 [√(3/11)]³ × 10^{-9} C

y-component has zero field.
