Charge is scalar then why electron s charge negative

There are two points : (1) Some times the idea of negative and positive is by convention. For example charge is a scalar quantity, but electron has negative charge. But, this does not mean that value of charge is negative .(2): Some time negative or positive depends on where and when we select the position of zero.
