Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was an English essayist, best known for his Essays of Elia
and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, which he produced with his sister,
Mary Lamb (1764-1847). Lamb has been referred to by E V Lucas, his principal biographer,
as the most lovable figure in English literature. Lamb greatly influenced the English
Essay form. Charles and his sister Mary, together have brought to the readers twenty of
Shakespeare's best plays, presenting them in delightful prose which retains the charm of the
original dramatic text.
