Question -:

Check if 4, 5, 6 and 8 are in proportion.

_________________________________________________

Answer -:

Method 1 -:

To check if these numbers are in proportion, we need to convert them into fractions.

4 and 5 =  \frac{4}{5}.

6 and 8 = \frac{6}{8}.

In a proportion, the ratios are equal.

\frac{4}{5} cannot be reduced anymore since 5 is a prime number.

Reducing \frac{6}{8}, we get \frac{3}{4}.

\frac{4}{5} is written as 4 : 5.

\frac{3}{4} is written as 3 : 4.

Since these two ratios are not equal, hence the numbers are not in proportion.

Method 2 -:

The product of the extremes and means in a proportion are equal.

Given,

Extremes = 4 and 8.

Means = 5 and 6.

The product of 4 and 8 = 32.

The product of 5 and 6 = 30.

Since 32 and 30 are not equal, that is, the product of the means and extremes are not equal, therefore the numbers are not in proportion.

Additional information -:

What is a proportion?

When two ratios are equal, they are said to be in proportion.

What are extremes and means?

The 2 numbers in the middle are called the means.

The other 2 numbers in the side are called extremes.

Note : The product of the extremes and means are always equal in a proportion.

Hope it helps! :)

4:5::6:8

1. product of extreme = 32 (4×8)

2. product of means = 30 (5×6)

so it is not in proportion
