Check Point 04
1 What is the heating effect of electric current?
2 Siate the factors on which the heat produced in a current conductor
depends. Give one practical application of this effect.
3 A fuse wire consists of an alloy of lead and tin. Why?
4 An electric heater of resistance 50022 is connected to a mains supply
for 30 min. If 15A current flows through the filament of the heater, then
calculate the heat energy produced in the heater.

Answer:

1.When current flows through the tungsten wire, it becomes heated and emits light.

2.Factors - square of current, resistance of the given conductor, time for which the current flows.

electric heating devices like electric iron or any other electric bulb.

3.Fuse wire is made up of an alloy of tin and lead because it has a very low melting point so if a short circuit happens, the wire will melt and this will break the circuit. Copper can stand high temperature so it is not suitable to be used in fuses.

5.Bulbs are filled with chemically inactive Nitrogen or Argon gas to prevent the oxidation of tungsten filament used in the bulb.
