- 4 - 8, - 16............. Are in GP where first term of the GP=a=-4, and common ratio of this GP = r= 2.

Firstly let us assume that - 256 is a term of this GP.

so

a_n=-256 \\

so

a {r}^{n - 1}  = a_n=-256 \\  \implies - 4 \times  {2}^{n - 1}  =  - 256 \\  \implies \:  {2}^{n - 1}  = 64 \\  \implies {2}^{n - 1}  =  {2}^{6}  \\  \implies \: n - 1 = 6 \\  \implies \: n = 7

As perfect value of an can be calculated show - 256 is the term of GP and the term is 7th term.
