replace y -1/2 in p (y)

p [-1/2] = 4 [-1/2]³ + 4 [-1/2]² - [-1/2] - 1

= 4 [-1/8] + 4 [1/4] + 1/2 - 1

= -1/2 + 1 + 1/2 - 1

= 0
