putting x in the expression will give the remainder. If remainder gets to be 0 then (x-1) is a factor of the expression and if not then it a not a factor of that expression.

f(x)=4x^4 - 3x^3 - 2x^2 +x -7

f(1)=4-3-2+1-7

f(1)= -7

To be a factor of that expression f(1)=0 but it is 7 hence (x-1) isn't a factor of ...(that expression)
