Answer : ΔU and ΔH of methane are same. Therefore, Heat of combution of CH4 is same as -X KJ mol-¹.

Heat of cumbution : When 1 mole of any sustance show complete burning in presence of oxygen then it is known as Heat/Enthalpy of cumbution.

Reaction;

CH 4 (g)+2O 2(g)⟶CO 2 (g)+2H 2 O(l)

Now,

Δn g=(n p −n r )=1−3=−2

Again,

ΔH =ΔU +Δn gRT

ΔH = −X−2RT

∴ΔH < ΔU
