Iron(II) chloride when mixed with ammonium hydroxide yields ammonium chloride and iron(II) hydroxide as follows:

FeCl2 + 2(NH4OH) ⇄ Fe(OH)2 + 2NH4Cl

Iron hydroxide is an insoluble reddish brown precipitate.

This reaction occurs at a temperature of 80C in the presence of nitrogen

On the other hand, when Ferric chloride reacts with ammonium hydroxide it undergoes the following double-displacement reaction:

2 FeCl3 + 4 NH4OH  ---------------> 2 Fe(OH)3 + 6NH4Cl
