CH3OH + CH2 -------> CH3CH2OH
These compounds belong to the same homologous series so CH2 is added to Methanol.

Methanol CH3 c o o h
And when we add ch2 to the equation CH3 c o o h we get CH3 ch2 c o o h and that is ethanoic acid similarly to get ethanol add Ch 2 on Ch 3 0h you will get ethanol with which formula CH3 ch2 o h.
