Concept:

The criss-cross method can be defined as the method in which the charges of each ion are written under each ion and the charges are interchanged in a manner such that, the charge of the first ion becomes the subscript of the second ion and the charge on the second ion becomes the subscript of the first ion.

Given:

The compound sulphuric acid.

Find:

The chemical formula of sulphuric acid.

Solution:

Writing the chemical formula of sulphuric acid by criss-cross method,

H         SO₄

1             2

Interchanges in the way that the charge of the first ion becomes the subscript of the second ion i.e, H₂, and the charge on the second ion becomes the subscript of the first ion, i.e, (SO₄)₁. So, the chemical formula becomes H₂SO₄.

Hence, the chemical formula of sulphuric acid becomes H₂SO₄.
