Matte is a term in pyrometallurgy. It refers to the molten metal sulfide phases formed during smelting of base metals like copper and nickel.

FeS and Cu2S are missible in molten state. The molten mixture of copper sulphide or Cu2S and iron sulphide or FeS is known as copper matte.

The chemical formula of copper matte is Cu2S+FeS. It is a combination of copper sulfide and iron sulfide. It is a phase in which extracted metal is converted into crude metal which is a final product. 80-70% of copper matte is used 80-95%. 5- 17% metallic copper, Fe-Co alloy etc are used.
