To FinD :-

  • Chemical formulae of methane and ethane .

SolutioN :-

We need to find the chemical formula of Methane and Ethane . For nomenclature of hydrocarbons we follow certain rules out of which I would be using here some .

The compound is named on the basis of number of carbon atoms , functional groups etc . According to IUPAC ( International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry ) Nomenclature ,

\boxed{\pink{\sf Prefix + Word \ Root + Primary\ Suffix + Secondary \ Suffix }}

Nomenclature of Straight Chain Hydrocarbon:-

\boxed{\pink{\sf  Word \ Root + Primary\ Suffix }}

 \boxed{\begin{array}{r|r} \underline{\red{\textsf{\textbf{ Number $_{\textsf{\textbf{\red{(Carbon Atoms)}}}} $}}}} &\underline{\red{\textsf{\textbf{ Word Root }}}} \\ \sf 1 & \sf Meth \\\sf 2 & \sf Eth \\\sf 3 &\sf Prop \\\sf 4& \sf But  \\\sf 5 & \sf Pent \end{array} }

Hence from the table it's clear that Methane will have one Carbon atom . And we see that the Primary suffix of Methane is " ane " . This means it belongs to Alkanes which have a general formula of \sf C_n H_{(2n+2)} . Using this formula the number of hydrogen atoms will be = 2*1+2= 2 + 2 = 4 . Hence the chemical formula of Methane will be ,

\qquad\qquad \boxed{\pink{\tt {Methane = CH_4 }}}

\rule{200}2

Now the compound ethane has Word Root of eth . So the number of Carbon Atoms would be 3 . And hence the number of hydrogen atoms will be = 2*2+2 = 4+2 = 6 . Hence the chemical formula of Ethane will be ,

\qquad\qquad \boxed{\pink{\tt{ Ethane = C_2H_6 }}}
