Alkenes are unsaturated compounds, which makes them highly reactive. Most of these chemical reactions occur at the Carbon-Carbon double bonds. This makes alkenes far more reactive than alkanes.

Answer:

  • Alkanes are saturated compounds.
  • They are very less reactive, and behave inert towards acid, bases, oxidising and reducing agents at ordinary temperature.
  • They react with halogens or nitric acid when heated.
  • They mainly exhibit substitution reactions like halogenation and nitration.
  • They also undergo thermal decomposition or pyrolysis and combustion.
