Na + H2o = Na(oH)² + H2

2Na + 2H20 ⇒ 2 NaOH + H2

Sodium being highly reactive reacts violently with water. It is a highly exothermic process. So a great amount of heat is generated because of which the hydrogen evolved catches fire.
