Charcoal is commonly used as a black powder in most of the fireworks, This black powder contains charcoal, sulphur, and potassium nitrate. The fireworks contain an oxidizing agent to produce oxygen needed so that the mixture inside the fireworks can burn.

2 KNO₃ + 5 Mg → K₂O + N₂ + 5 MgO

The reducing agent in the firecracker burns the oxygen from the oxidizing agents to produce hot gases.

S + O₂ → SO₂

C + O₂ → CO₂

Complete combustion with Ethane gas (C₂H₆):

2C₂H₆(g)  +  7O₂(g)   →  4CO₂(g)  +  6H₂O(g)  +  Heat energy.

Incomplete combustion reaction with Methane Gas (CH₄):

3CH₄(g)  +  4O₂(g)  →  C(s)  +  2CO(g)  +  6H₂O(g) + Heat energy
