CHEMICAL SYMBOLS
As mentioned earlier, a chemical symbol is an abbreviation used to denote an element. It
is usually derived from the name of the element. Earlier, the representation was done using
pictorial symbols. The modern system of representing an element using letters of the English
alphabet was devised by Berzelius.
The features of this modern system are:
In some cases, the first letter of the name of the element is usually used in capitals) to
represent it. For example, H for hydrogen, O for oxygen, and N for nitrogen.
The name of two or more elements may start with the same letter. For such elements, two-
letter symbols are used. For example, Al for aluminium and Ar for argon,
