Lucas reagent test is one of the tests for alcohol. It is used to differentiate between different alcohols.Lucas reagent is ZnCl2+HCl.Alcohols give white turbidity with it.3° alcohols instantly give turbidity,2°alcohols take 5-10 min to give turbidity, and 1° do not show any visible change until heated.Isobutyl alcohol is 1° alcohol while sec butyl is 2°.So they can be differentiated using lucas reagent test.
Another test can be iodoform test.It is test for aldehydes and ketones but all secondary alcohols and ethanol (the only primary alcohol to give this test) give this test.Reagent used is NaOH and I2,and a pale yellow ppt is formed upon reaction.Since sec butyl alcohol is secondary alcohol so it gives iodoform test but isobutyl alcohol doesn't give this test.
