Lucas reagent test can differentiate between 1, 2, 3 degree alcohol with rate of reaction . 3 degree alcohol gives instant terbidity with lucas reagent in between 1to 2 min while 2 degree alcohole gives test upto 10 min and 1 degree alcohol gives test upto or more than half an hour . The reaction is carried out by SN2 mechanism
