Explanation:
1. An Acid is a substance that turns blue litmus to red. It is sour in taste.
A Base is substance that converts red litmus to blue. It is bitter in taste.
2. To check whether a substance is acidic or basic, we need a substance called Indicator. An Indicator detect the presence of an acid or a base by change in color.
3. Common examples of indicator are Turmeric, China rose, Phenolphthalein.
4. This activity can be done using Turmeric as an indicator.
5.Turmeric turns red when comes in contact with base.
Yellow color of turmeric brightens when an acid is added to it.
6. Add a pinch of turmeric in a soap solution. It turns red.
This demonstrate that soap is basic in nature.
7. Add a pinch of turmeric in a spoonful of lemon juice. Yellow color retains.
Hence lemon is acidic.
8. Add a drop of Vinegar in turmeric powder. Yellow color retains.
This shows vinegar is acidic in nature.
