Chemoreception is a process by which the organisms respond to various signals that have been stimulated by the chemicals in their environments. This kind of reception is primarily dependent on the senses of smell and taste.

The animals which do not have a notochord are called as non-chordates or invertebrates.

In aquatic animals, the chemoreceptors are usually found in the pits where the ciliary action takes place due to water circulation. These animals release amino acids as the chemicals for chemoreception through the gills, skin, faeces, or urine.

In arthropods, the chemoreceptors are the hollow hairs.
