Cherrapunji and mawsynr receive more than 11000mm of rainfall. Shillong located very near to these places receives only 1000mm of rainfall. What could be the reason?

there are two types of slopes windward and leeward shillong receive less rainfall because it is located in the leeward slope. whereas the other two are present on the windward slope
the leeward slope does not get the obstruction from the monsoon winds so they receive less rainfall
