पोटेंशियल ऑफ हाइड्रोजन (Potential of Hydrogen)
पीएच यानि पोटेंशियल ऑफ हाइड्रोजन यानी हाइड्रोजन की संभावित क्षमता होती है। हाइड्रोजन के अणु ही किसी पदार्थ की प्रकृति तय करते हैं। यानि वो पदार्थ अम्लीय है या क्षारीय है। अगर किसी पदार्थ का पीएच 1 या 2 है, यानि 5 से कम है, तो उसकी अम्लीय प्रकृति होगी। अगर पदार्थ का पीएच 11 या 12 है तो उसकी प्रकृति क्षारीय होगी। सामान्य तौर पर 7 पीएच को उदासीन माना जाता है। पानी का पीएच भी 7 होता है, इसलिए पानी में पदार्थ अम्लीय या क्षारीय नही रहता।
हमारे दाँतो का सामान्य पीएच 5.5 से कम होने पर दांत के अंदर की प्रकृति अम्लीय हो जाती है, जिससे दांतों में कैविटी आदि बनने लगती हैं और इन कैविटी में बैक्टीरिया पनपने लगते हैं, जो दाँतों में सड़न के लिये उत्तरदायी होते हैं, इसलिये हमारे दाँत खराब होने शुरु हो जाते है।

Potential of Hydrogen
The pH is the Potential of Hydrogen. Hydrogen molecules determine the nature of a substance. That is, the substance is acidic or alkaline. If a substance has a pH of 1 or 2, ie less than 5, it will have acidic nature. If the pH of the substance is 11 or 12, then its nature will be alkaline. PH 7 is generally considered neutral. The pH of water is also 7, so the substance in water does not remain acidic or alkaline.
When the normal pH of our teeth is less than 5.5, the inside of the tooth becomes acidic, due to which cavities start forming in the teeth and bacteria grow in these cavities, which are responsible for tooth decay. That's why our teeth start to deteriorate.
