Chiasma formation occurs in the diplotene stage but crossing over starts in the pachytene stage. How is that possible? I thought crossing over occurs only after the formation of chiasma.

Answer:

chiasma does not form in diplotene stage .. it just becomes visible in diplotene stage .. so it may be formed earlier .

Explanation:

The chiasma is a structure that forms between a pair of homologous chromosomes by crossover recombination and physically links the homologous chromosomes during meiosis
