Childhood is all about innocence and purity of the heart. When children become child actors, the same innocence is put at stake. In fact the childhood of a child artist is ruthlessly destroyed by the child's own parents.

To begin with, a child has limited needs, none of which are materialistic. As the child grows into an adult, materialism starts seeping into the picture. Yet, when parents push a child into acting, they are catapulting the child into the materialistic world, where the child also brings home fame and money. This is completely in contrast to what children are naturally supposed to be.

Additionally, childhood is marked by carefree living. A child is not stressed by any financial, social or religious concerns. The highlight of the day is playing. Yet, child artists are made to work. They sacrifice their normal childhood and the time meant to be spent playing under the open skies, with friends is instead spent under artificial lights.

Further, as the child artist has an overdose of exposure, the child's mind absorbs too many ideas prematurely. So, the child behaves in a manner that is a lot more mature than his own age. This in itself leads to a loss of innocence and childhood.

All said and done, ours is a democratic nation, where everyone has the freedom of action. So, though there are laws against child labour, the general public is not aware of any child acting laws. What everyone knows however, is that a child artist has a certain value in the acting industry. It is time to consider what is more precious- the child's acting skills or the child's childhood, that if once gone, can never be replaced.
