In our society, this practice was practiced since the medieval period. Because of this, uneducated and infirm people in Indian Hindu society thought it appropriate to marry their girl child only. The prevalence of child marriage also increased rapidly due to dowry. At that time, the birth of a daughter in any house was considered inauspicious.
The boy and girl were unable to fully resist the rites called child marriage due to their complete mindlessness. On the other getting married at a young age would also get rid of giving dowry sometimes. Due to this type of thinking, the prevalence of child marriage in middle and lower class families increased rapidly.
Kanyadaan is considered a sacred and auspicious task in the marriage ceremony. On this occasion, the parents of the girl give some gifts and money to their daughter as per their status. This dowry system gradually went into a distorted situation. The result of this was that people began to consider the birth of a daughter in the family as a burden.
People who think of their daughter as a burden, get them married and celebrate their duties by getting them married. But this wrong tradition later gave birth to many big problems in the society. Due to the marriage of boys and girls at a young age, they soon start the work of childbirth. Due to which the mortality of the middle and lower classes also fall, along with the promotion of uncontrolled population.
Seeing the evils and ill effects of this child marriage practice, from time to time, the social reformers did many important works towards ending this system from the root. The Government of India has also made strict laws to prevent child marriage as a crime. Also, the minimum age of marriage for all has been set at 21 years for boys and 18 years for girls.
Marriage of children below this age is a legal offense and there is a provision for severe punishment for the parents and participants of the children who do so. Despite all this, today everything is becoming more common. In Rajasthan, there is a flood of child marriages mainly on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya (Akhatij). It is surprising that in such child marriage programs, the law makers and their alleged defenders are also seen sitting with such people.
