Answer:
Illiteracy in India has always been a talking point. Illiteracy being the root cause of all the major problems like poverty, unemployment, child labour, female foeticide, population burst and many more. Each problem that our community comes across is like a link. It’s linked to each other.
Child Literacy is a grey area in the country with a lot of the population living below the poverty line.
Every issue that our society faces is like a link of a chain. Each issue is connected to another, either directly or indirectly.
Talking about numbers India has the largest population of illiterate adults at 287 million out of which 68% of total illiterate adults in India are women. It is very hard to digest that the land of the Vedas is one of the countries with the highest illiteracy levels. Dissemination of literacy is most of the times correlated with today’s civilization such as modernization, urbanization, industrialization etc.
In India, illiteracy is identified by major gaps between the urban and rural populace. Rural population is primarily dependent on agriculture and so the illiteracy rate is quite high as compared to the urban population as there the people are more into “employee class” and thus are educated. Amongst the male and female also there’s discrepancy. In India, the social strata boosts for the education of the male child and the education for the girl child gies for a toss. Especially in the remote villages this is even more.
While the government is trying to bring about new policies and trying to change the minds of the masses, the literacy condition in India is still underdeveloped and far behind when it comes to the rest of the world. There have been many policies which has come as a boon to the children. The most prominent policy being The 1992 Education Policy which makes elementary education free and compulsory for children upto the age of 14.
Illiteracy has the capability to get down even the most powerful states, so for growing from a developing country to a developed country we need to tackle to get illiteracy down by proposing newer models with better application. They decline to realise that literacy plays a major part in the development of our country. Ignoring the concern of illiteracy can have a damaging effect on the welfare of India.
Our government has been working as far as illiteracy programmes are concerned, but it’s not working too hard. However, there is still need to educate the masses about the need to remove illiteracy. The government as well as various NGOs like Umang Foundation Trust have been striving hard to do their bit.
So, all of us have to come together to do our bit in helping India become a illiteracy free nation.
