Explanation: Chilka Lake is a pear shaped lake located in the eastern part of Orissa, India spreading over 1100 sq km. It is the largest salt water lagoon in Asia.
It covers the district of Ganjam, Khurda, and Puri of Odisha (earlier known as Orissa). Rambha and Balugaon are the two towns which acts as the gateway for the lake. The lake is situated between the deltas of Mahanadi and Godavari. It is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a sandy ridge.
Chilka lake is regarded as the paradise for the bird lovers. An arid of species including flamingos,white bellied sea eagles,jacana and herons can be seen here. Apart from birds one can also see deer,golden jackals,hyenas etc. Aquatic creatures like dolphin,prawns,crabs etc can also be spotted.
During 1981 Chilka lake was included to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.
