Fire place is associated with kindling woods and heating the room during the winter season. The fire place is a congested area, and therefore, complete combustion cannot occur in the fireplace This creates lot of soot, smoke and harmful gases like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are evolved. So, chimneys are placed above the fire place for the proper passage of the oot and the gase, otherwise these would have filled the room, and cause suffocation known as asphyxia.
