Single-party system is type of state where one political party has right to form government normally on existing constitution.  

Other parties are outlawed/allowed to take only limited and controlled participation in elections.

Sometimes term de-facto one-party state is used to explain dominant-party system unlike one-party state, allows democratic multiparty elections but

existing practices/balance of political power effectively prevent opposition from winning elections.
