China is a very large country in eastern Asia. The ancient civilization of China began around 3000 B.C. It began near a very long river called the Huang He. Huang He means "Yellow River." Chinese people farmed the fertile soil along the Huang He. They used the Huang He to irrigate their farms. The Huang He often flooded the land. The floods sometimes destroyed farms, houses, and even whole villages. When this happened, the people called the river "China's Sorrow." The Chinese began to work together to stop the floods. They built strong dirt walls (levees) near the river. Sometimes these walls stopped the floods from destroying their farms.

The ancient Chinese developed new ways of farming and invented more efficient farming tools. Among the many new things they introduced were the iron plow, and row cultivation, or growing crops in rows. The ancient Chinese had learned that row cultivation led to higher yields, or more crops. One of the most important farming inventions of the ancient Chinese was the iron plow. The Chinese developed the first iron plows in the world. Iron plows were stronger than the older wood, stone, and bronze plows.

The land in China is very hilly and mountainous, which is not ideal for farming. Fresh water, fertile soil, temperate climate, and flat land are needed for agriculture. The Chinese had to develop a way to create flat land to grow crops on their hillsides. They adapted to their environment by developing terrace farming. Farmers built terraces to shore up a hillside, creating several levels of flat land on which crops could be planted. In a seemingly inhospitable place, they could grow the crops they needed to survive.

Based on the source, what was one positive effect of the Huang He River on the civilization of China.

With the ability to better control the Huang He and save their crops from flooding, Chinese leaders were able to solidify their rule of China, and a number of dynasties headquartered in the region followed.

Based on the source, what was one negative effect of the Huang He River on the civilization of China.

As populations grew ever larger along the treacherous river's banks, so too did the death tolls from flooding. In 1887, a major Yellow River flood killed an estimated 900,000 to 2 million people, making it the third-worst natural disaster in history.

Based on the source, explain how the people of China controlled the flooding of the Huang He River?

Throughout most of its history, China has attempted to control the Huang He by building overflow channels and increasingly taller dikes, and in 1955 the Chinese embarked on an ambitious 50-year construction plan and flood-control program.
