Answer:

Internet censorship and surveillance has tightly implemented in China that block social websites like Gmail, Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and others. The excessive censorship practices of the Great Firewall of China have now engulfed the VPN service providers as well.

Google and the Chinese government have a bad history. The history includes political activists’ Gmail accounts being hacked by Chinese government hackers, and Google loudly telling the world about it. The government did not appreciate that one bit.

Search engines doing business in China are expected to manage search results concerning sensitive topics, engaging in censorship. Microsoft and Yahoo, as well as other companies, do this. Therefore it isn't accurate to say Bing and Yahoo operate “without restrictions” in China, although none of these companies, including Google, operate entirely “without restrictions” in Europe or the United States, either.

There's more. People have been sentenced to jail in China based on private information Yahoo provided about its Yahoo Mail users to the Chinese government. These companies won't protect you if the NSA comes calling, and they won't protect Chinese citizens from their government either. Google took a stand, and they got frozen out.

There's another reason, which might actually be the most important of all. Google is the top search engine in the world. In China, however, China’s own Baidu search engine is #1. Bing and Yahoo are better for English-language searches, but their popularity for Chinese-language searches is low. By blocking Google, the government keeps a titan of a foreign competitor out of the market while ensuring maximum control over search results. Search engines are big business, after all, and without significant foreign competition, more of that money stays in China.
