Whenever you face difficulty in redox, do remember these points:-
(i) loss of electron (oxidation)
(ii)addition of electronegative element (oxidation)
{electronegative element will pull electron towards itself, it's also somewhat removal of electron}.
Oxygen is an electronegative element so we say that addition of oxygen is oxidation.
#The opposite is true for reduction.
i.e. addition of hydrogen (electropositive element) is reduction
gain of electron is reduction.
Chloride ion has 1 electron extra and chlorine molecule has no extra electron, hence, chloride to chlorine is loss of electron (oxidation).
Hope it helped.
