Chlorine is a naturally occurring neutral element with a symbol (Cl) and atomic number 17. Chloride is an ion of chlorine. Essentially, when atoms gain or lose electrons they become ions. Chlorine atom gain one electron to become negatively charged chloride ion (Cl-)

Chlorine gas is naturally found in atmosphere.
But chloride ion is formed when chlorine gain one electron.
