Atomic no. = No. of protons = 17
Mass no.
= No. of neutrons + No. of protons
35 = Neutrons + 17
35 - 17 = Neutrons
18 = Neutrons
There are 17 Protons and 18 Neutrons in the atom

The number of the neutron is 18 and the number of the proton is 17.

  • The atomic number of an atom defines its number of protons. The atomic number of Cl is 17. Hence the number of the proton is 17.
  • Again the mass number of an atom defines the sum of the number of protons and neutrons in that atom.
  • The mass number of Cl is 35.
  • Hence the number of the neutron is 35-17=18.
  • So, the number of the neutron is 18 and the number of the proton is 17.
