Chloroform and acetone do not form an ideal liquid pair whereas acetone and benzene do form. Why?

Explanation:

Mixture of chloroform and acetone forms a solution with negative deviation from Raoult's law.

1 Chloroform molecule is able to form hydrogen bond with acetone   molecule.

2 This decreases the escaping tendency of molecules for each component.

3 Consequently the vapour pressure decreases resulting in negative deviation from Raoult's law.

Where as Acetone and benzene do as they forms a solution with positive deviation from Raoult's law

1 intermolecular attractive forces between the solute solvent molecules are weaker than those with solute-solute and solvent -solvent.

2 So increase in vapour pressure and result in positive deviation.
