Chloroform. is prepared in the laboratory by heating a mixture of Bleaching powder with ethanol or acetone. In this reaction, bleaching powder acts as oxidising chlorinating and hydrolyzing agent. Chlorine gas evolved from bleaching powder paste oxides and chlorinates ethanol.

Bleaching powder is produced by the action on dry slaked lime c a o h + cl2 gives cacl2 + H2O it is used as oxidising agent in many chemical industries and it is also used for disinfecting drinking water to make it free from germs as it is made by chlorine so it is also helpful for making chloroform
