When we take one molecule of chlorophyll and find its structure we will see that it somehow looks like kite or tadpole which has head and tail .

Chlorophyll a :

  1. Formula => C55 H72 O5 N4 Mg .
  2. Chlorophyll a is of methane group .
  3. There blue- green in colour .
  4. They usually absorb red colour more than violet - blue .

Chlorophyll b :

  1. Formula used => C55 O70 O6 N4 Mg
  2. They abzorb violet blue colour more then red .

Carotenoids :

  1. They are yellow , brown and reddish pigment .
  2. Carotenoids and chlorophyll b are accessory pigments of chlorophyll .
  3. They are of two types :-
  • Carotenes ( Orange to red )
  • xanthophyll (yellow)

Some important points to remember :-

  • Autumn leaves colour is due to Lutein .
  • Brown algae colour is due to fucoxanthin .
