When we take one molecule of chlorophyll and find its structure we will see that it somehow looks like kite or tadpole which has head and tail .
Chlorophyll a :
- Formula => C55 H72 O5 N4 Mg .
- Chlorophyll a is of methane group .
- There blue- green in colour .
- They usually absorb red colour more than violet - blue .
Chlorophyll b :
- Formula used => C55 O70 O6 N4 Mg
- They abzorb violet blue colour more then red .
Carotenoids :
- They are yellow , brown and reddish pigment .
- Carotenoids and chlorophyll b are accessory pigments of chlorophyll .
- They are of two types :-
- Carotenes ( Orange to red )
- xanthophyll (yellow)

Some important points to remember :-
- Autumn leaves colour is due to Lutein .
- Brown algae colour is due to fucoxanthin .
