Ammonia has a characteristic sharp, choking smell. It also makes damp red litmus paper turn blue. Ammonia forms a white smoke of ammonium chloride when hydrogen chloride gas, from concentrated hydrochloric acid, is held near it.

Experiment :

Add conc.H2SO4 to metal chlorides like NaCl, KCl,etc.

Observation:

1.) The gas is colourless with a pungent choking odour.

2.) Dense white fumes of ammonium chloride are formed.

Inference:

1.) Gas may be O2,CO2,HCl,NO2

2.)HCl gas confirmed.

Result:

HCl gas is released when any chloride salt is treated with conc.H2SO4
