The kingdom was divided into provinces called Mandalams, looked after by governers. Each mandalam was further divided into numerous valanadus. Each valanadu consisted of a number of villages. The village (called Nadu or kurram) was the lowest unit. There were also many towns or nagarams such as Tanjore, Kanchi and Puhar.
