The two consonant phonemes are /l/ as in lungs, /b/ as in bicycle whereas the two vowel phonemes are /ʊ/ as in book, /e/ as in cells.

Voiced consonants make a sound using the vibration of the vocal cords in the larynx, that is the voice-box.

We can say if a consonant is being spoken in the following ways:

1. Put a finger on the throat when say a word. If there is a vibration, it is a voiced consonant.

2. Put fingers in the ears while saying a word. If it is audible through the vibrations in the head and neck it will be a voiced consonant.

A vowel is an "open" sound in which there is no blocking by the lips, teeth, palate, tongue or any other part.

There are 5 vowels in the English alphabet - a, e, i, o and u.

But there are a lot more sound of vowels in the English language that has been identified here as Short Vowels in some words.
