Cultural differences affect every aspect of global communication. There may also be cultural overtones in choosing a medium to communicate. Some industrialised nations have, for example, heavily rely on digital means and highlight written messages through oral or personally informed communications. The United States, Canada , the United Kingdom certainly. But this trend is illustrated by Germany. However, Japan still depends  more on face-to- face communication than on the written mode and it has access to new technologies. The medium preference may not be determined by the extent of industrialisation, but by whether the nation falls into a high context/low context culture.

Explanation:

Lets take the difference between Japan (Asian) & German (European)

Japanese

  • In order to speak and to convey what someone feels they rely on facial expression, vocal tone and posture.
  • Japanese usually trust non-verbal messages to be more meaningful than spoken words.
  • The context in which anything has been said impacts the word's meaning. Thus to fully appreciate the response, it is essential to understand the situation.
  • Frowning is construed as a signal of disagreement when someone is speaking.
  • The majority of Japanese maintain speak an impassive expression when they speak
  • Non-verbal communication is so essential  that there is a book about the interpretation of the signs for 'foreigners"
  • It is not respected to look at the eyes of another person , especially of a person who is older than you due to age or status.
  • The Japanese avoid eye contact for their privacy in overcrowded situations.
  • In Japanese society, saving face is crucial.
  • The Japanese believe that "turning down a request" from someone causes the other person to become "embarrassed" and lose face.
  • In cases where the request cannot be accepted, it is 'uncomfortable' or 'considered.'
  • Face is a sign of personal dignity, meaning that one's peers have a high standing. So they don't openly criticize, insult or place anybody on the spot.

German

  • German people usually enjoy simple & direct speech. They are courteous and communicate formally, they think before they speak & do not like to "beat around the bush".
  • This implies that subtle or implied Japanese communication in the German workplace can be lost. This also implies that the American style of 'dropping out an idea' before being considered is little appreciated.
  • When they greet  others or say  farewell, they don't forget to shake hands firmly with the other person. Good eye contact is crucial. They feel free to smile, but don't force  it.
  • They feel smiling naturally lightens up the formal atmosphere in meetings. Emotions usually aren't visible, however they are  sensitive despite the outside appearances and warm up to the person  when they get to know that person.
  • They make sure they use the right title when addressing someone/writing a letter. German people like to get into contact with the eye when talking, and they think it shows the sense of honesty and interest when speaking face to face. When it comes to "communication", they are straightforward & direct, and as such they can unintentionally give a "hurtful" comment. Germans are known to be at first unfriendly, as  their friendly attitude is mainly for relatives & close friends .
