Given :  the probability of an appliance having a blown fuse is 6% and

the probability of it having a broken wire is 4%. Also, 1% of the appliances to be repaired  come in with both a blown fuse and a broken wire

To Find :  probability that an  appliance has either of the problems or both?

Solution:

Blown Fuse = 6 % = 0.06

Broken wire = 4 % = 0.04

Both  =  1 %  = 0.01

an  appliance has either of the problems or both

(A ∪ B ) =  A + B - (A ∩ B)

= 0.06 + 0.04 - 0.01

= 0.09

= 9 %

Probability  is 0.09  or 9 % that an  appliance has either of the problems or both
