QUESTION :

Jenny has lost her way home. She was standing 25 yards away from her house in the southwest direction. She walked 20 yards north and reached point X. How far and in which direction would she have to walk to reach her house?

ANSWER :

Jenny would have to travel 15 yards in the east direction to reach her home.

GIVEN :

Distance between Jenny and her home at present = 25 yards southeast

She walked a distance of = 20 yards north

TO FIND :

The distance and the direction towards which she would have to walk to reach home

SOLUTION :

Jenny is 25 yards away from her house in the south-west direction.

Then she walks 20 yards north and reaches point X.

A right angle triangle is formed with hypotenuse equal to 25 yards and perpendicular of the triangle = 20 yards

The length of the base would be equal to the distance she would have to walk to reach her house .

According to Pythagoras theorem :

Hypotenuse^2 = perpendicular^2 + base ^2

Hence, 25^2 = 20^2 + base^2

=> base =  √(25^2-20^2) = 15 yards

Therefore, Jenny would have to travel 15 yards in the east direction to reach her home.
