Case 1) :-

• Let initial position = Point A .
• From point A sumit walks 10 m towards north and reach at point B .
• AB = 10 m .

Case 2) :-

• From point B he turns left , towards west direction and walks 40 m and reach at point C .
• BC = 40 m

Case 3) :-

• From point C he turns right , towards north direction and walks 20 m and reach at point D and stopped .
• CD = 20 m
• Final position = point D .

from image we can see that,

→ AB = EC = 10 m

and,

→ BC = AE = 40 m

therefore, in right angled ∆AED we have,

→ DE = DC + CE = 20 + 10 = 30 m

→ EA = 40 m { Equals to BC }

So,

→ AD² = EA² + DE² { By pythagoras theorem }

→ AD² = (40)² + (30)²

→ AD² = 1600 + 900

→ AD² = 2500

→ AD² = (50)²

square root both sides,

→ AD = 50 m (Ans.)

Hence, Sumit is standing in North - West direction and 50 m far from the starting point .
