In a triangle,the bisector of an angle divides the opposite base in ratio equal to that of the other two sides containing the angle.
Here,In ∆ABC , AD bisects angle BAC
so by above theorem
AC/AB=DC/BD
or,12/9=4.8/BD
or,BD=4.8×9/12=3.6
Therefore,3.6 is the answer
